Collagen: we drink it in our coffee, and we slather it on topically with the hopes that it will make our skin better. But what if there was a way to force the body into making more of it, naturally? The good news is, there is a way and it’s within your reach. You can increase your body’s natural collagen production through microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy. At Capitis Medical & Aesthetics in Roseville, CA, we offer microneedling, an effective treatment that can improve your skin, increase collagen, and help your skin glow again.

How Long Does a Microneedling Session Last?
Some people don’t invest in their skin because they think that they don’t have the time. This treatment obliterates that excuse because it is a quick, efficient treatment typically performed in 30 minutes. When you decide to move forward and commit to a microneedling session, you are choosing a treatment that won’t keep you in the office for half of the day, but your entire session will take less than an hour of your day, yet the results will last for months to come.

What Is Microneedling?

At Capitis Medical & Aesthetics, we perform microneedling treatments with the innovative SkinPen. This handheld pen-like device is filled with ultra-fine, medical-grade needles ranging in length from .5 to 2 mm. During the treatment, the esthetician passes the SkinPen across the surface of your skin. These needles insert in and out of the skin repetitively as the pen moves across the skin, creating micro-injuries. This process forces the body to shift into healing mode and increases collagen and elastin production.

How Does It Work?

This treatment focuses on improving the skin by eliciting a natural response from the body. The body responds to the injuries made by the SkinPen and shifts into healing mode. During the healing process, it may not look like it but many different processes begin interacting just beneath the surface of the skin. This healing process takes place within three different phases:

The Inflammatory Phase

The inflammatory phase is where the body turns on its inflammatory response after the SkinPen punctures the skin’s surface. During this phase, the body utilizes the immune system to clean those wounds. Blood flow increases in the area treated and the body begins the process of creating new tissue.

The Proliferation Phase

During the proliferation phase, the body creates new cells and blood vessels in preparation for replacing the tissue with new, fresh skin.

The Remodeling Phase

In the remodeling phase, the area is remodeled so to speak, and the wound is rebuilt with new, fresh skin and blood vessels. Increased collagen production floods collagen to the injured area, plumping it and giving it a fresher, more youthful appearance.

What Happens During a Treatment?

During your appointment, your skin will be cleansed in preparation for treatment. Your esthetician will apply a topical anesthetic to your skin for your maximum comfort, and then she will pass the SkinPen back and forth across the surface of your skin. The needles will create microchannels, which are tiny punctures, in your skin, and your body will begin the healing process.

What Can I Expect Afterwards?
Once your treatment is over, you may experience some minor redness during the first 24-48 hours. That redness will pale in comparison to the immediate, noticeable improvements in your skin that you will begin and continue to see as time goes on. Your results will continue to increase over the next two to three months.

Are There Any Aftercare Instructions?

There are some directives that you should follow once your treatment is complete. You should avoid excess sun exposure, use sunscreen, and avoid exfoliating products in the days following your treatment. We will give you additional instructions post-treatment and can recommend the best products to use to ensure that you get the best results.

Will I Need More Than One Treatment?

Most people who commit to microneedling commit to a series of treatments for optimal results. The total number of treatments needed varies from one person to the next, based on different skin care goals and problematic skin conditions. We will develop a customized treatment plan for you based on your needs so that you can get the best results possible.

Maximizing Your Results: Combining Treatments

As a stand-alone treatment, microneedling will change your skin and give you the results you are looking for, but the way to maximize those results is by combining treatments. When you combine microneedling with other treatments, you can increase its effectiveness and further improve the quality of your skin. For those who have never visited a Med Spa before, the range of treatment options can be overwhelming, but don’t panic.

Adding Serums

The application of serums following your treatment allows powerful and highly effective ingredients to deeper penetrate the skin and improve more effectively. Once the skin is opened up and covered in micro-channels, we can take advantage of the opportunity to flood the skin with nourishing serums so that you will get even more out of your treatment. Two of the most popular serums we offer as combination treatments are PRP and Hyaluronic Acid.

PRP

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma and is most often associated with Vampire Facials. However, this plasma is highly effective when combined with microneedling. First, you will undergo a typical blood draw, and your blood will be spun in a centrifuge, separating the PRP from the blood. PRP will then be applied to your open skin. The PRP will enter the wounds, and it will help heal the skin, leading to faster collagen production and the creation of new blood vessels.

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic Acid (often abbreviated to HA) is another naturally occurring substance found in the human body. It is one of the main ingredients in dermal fillers because it is a hydrating substance that plumps the skin from the inside out and the outside in. Following your treatment, hyaluronic can be applied to the areas treated as a way to hydrate the skin more deeply. Treatments finished with a hyaluronic acid application lead to a smoother, more hydrated appearance.

The Benefits of Microneedling

It Provides an Instant Plumping Effect

This treatment is considered a form of collagen induction therapy, so the main result is increased collagen. Collagen production plumps the skin as it pushes upward, creating more volume and natural fullness. Your face will exhibit a youthful glow as a result.

It Helps Treat Delicate Areas

Everyone knows that the lip and under-eye area are far more delicate and sensitive than the rest of your face. A benefit of this treatment is that you can specifically target these areas and see vast improvements in any problem areas you may have.

The Under-Eye Area

You may think that dark circles beneath the eye develop from poor sleep, and while sleep does play a part in the appearance of your eye area, the root cause of this darkness is collagen loss. The dark circle is actually a shadow formed by a hollowness in the area. When the needles roll across the under-eye area, the micro-injuries boost collagen and improve those dark circles in a way that eye creams simply cannot.

The Area Around the Lips

Lip injections are all the rage right now, but what if you’re not ready to commit to lip injections but would still like to add some fullness to your lips? The SkinPen is safe for the area around the lips and can also help reduce the appearance of fine lines there as well. You will also get that plumping effect around your mouth, which can help the lips appear fuller.

It’s Natural

If you’re not sold on the idea of dermal fillers or neurotoxins, that’s ok; you don’t have to be. There are effective ways to obtain a more youthful appearance naturally, and this treatment provides the perfect option. You will see fuller, plumper skin, and an improvement in the appearance of your lines and wrinkles after your treatment. As you continue to undergo the recommended number of sessions, you will be able to reach your skin goals and maintain youthful skin.

Your Skin Will Get More From Your Products

The micro-channels created by the SkinPen open up your skin. As a result, when you apply your ingredient-rich products and serums, the active ingredients will better penetrate your skin and help improve your skin on a deeper level than they were pre-treatment.

It Works on All Skin Types

There isn’t just one skin type that benefits from this treatment, but it is safe for all skin tones, types, and textures. This makes it a versatile treatment that can help treat anyone who wants to address skin problems such as acne, stretch marks, and the signs of aging, regardless of their skin type or tone.

It Works on the Face and the Body

This treatment isn’t limited to the face. It is also highly effective on the areas of the body where you want to see improvement in your skin.

It Can Improve the Appearance of Stretch Marks

If you have stretch marks that haven’t responded to creams and scrubs, this treatment will help you achieve the results you are looking for but haven’t been able to find. When the SkinPen passes back and forth across your stretch marks, it creates injuries that lead to increased collagen production. That collagen pushes up from beneath the surface of the skin and helps the stretch mark appear less noticeable.

It Requires Zero Downtime

You won’t have to plan for downtime following your treatment. You can carry on with your normal day-to-day activities as soon as your appointment is complete.

It Helps Acne-Prone Skin

If you have acne-prone skin, this treatment can help alleviate that acne. Collagen production can help clear breakouts and the serums applied at the end of your treatment work to heal and repair the skin.

Who Is a Candidate?

If you have fine lines, moderate lines, or deep-set lines, wrinkles, sagging skin, or facial folds due to aging, this skin tightening treatment may be your solution. During your initial consultation, a doctor from our team will be able to assess your skin and talk with you about your goals and make sure that this treatment is best suited for your particular skin care needs and goals. We can put together a treatment plan that will improve your skin within weeks, all without surgery or injections.
