Are you hoping to slow or reduce the signs of aging, especially around your upper face? If so, Dysport might be the right fit for you. Our providers at Capitis Medical & Aesthetics in Roseville, CA, offer a range of different cosmetic injectables, so we know the ins and outs of what different injectables have to offer. This particular injection is primarily used to target lines and wrinkles but has also been used to help treat several medical conditions.

Where Can You Inject Dysport?

From Cosmetic to Medical Uses, Dysport Is a Versatile Product

There are many ways Dysport can be put to use, so there is a range of areas it can be injected into. Some of these areas can include:

  • Various lines around the eyes and forehead
  • Lines around the mouth and lower face
  • The neck to address neck bands
  • Areas with excessive sweat
  • Areas affected by cervical dystonia or spasticity

Although it does have an impressive range of treatment abilities, this particular injection is commonly used to reduce lines and wrinkles. With that in mind, we’ll start by covering the areas it is most often used:

Frown Lines

A frown line is the verticle line that appears between your eyebrows, also known as a glabellar line. You most commonly see it when you furrow your brow, but as the muscles in your face age, it may permanently settle in place regardless of your expression. When injected around frown lines, Dysport relaxes the muscles of the upper face. Smoothing over these frown lines can open up the face to create a lighter resting expression.

Forehead Lines

This injection is a great option for concerns ranging from fine lines to deeper wrinkles along the forehead. One of the unique features of this injection is its ability to spread more effectively than some of its competition. This is due in part to its dilution. With skillful administration, this can improve its ability to cover larger areas such as the forehead for quick and easy results.

Lines Around the Eyes

Often called crow’s feet, these lines originate from the outer corner of the eye and can spread upwards towards your eyebrow, or curve down towards your cheekbone. As the skin’s elasticity continues to degrade over time, the lines around the eyes can also continue to stretch and deepen. Neuromodulator injections are considered an effective treatment for crow’s feet.

Additional Cosmetic Treatment Areas

In addition to treating the above-mentioned areas of the face, our experts at Capitis Medical & Aesthetics are able to put their skillful application to use in several other areas.

Lines and Wrinkles Around the Corners of the Mouth

Smile lines and marionette lines both affect the lower face. Smile lines come down from the corners of the nose to the side of the mouth and are also called nasolabial folds. Marionette lines start at the corners of the mouth and reach down to the jaw. In both cases, this injection can help to smooth over deep and thin lines alike, freeing up your smile.

Neck Bands

Have you been considering a neck lift, but don’t want to commit to the cost and downtime that comes with surgery? A skillful administration of your injections can help give you some of the same benefits as a neck lift without having to put a pause on your life. Neuromodulator injections can smooth over some of the bands and lines along your neck. This helps to give the skin of your neck a youthful, rejuvenated appearance.

The Jawline

When used on the jaw, this treatment can have a slimming effect on your face. When a neuromodulator is injected into the jaw muscles, the muscles will respond by losing some of their bulk. For patients who want a slimmer facial appearance, this ability can make it a useful tool. It has also been used to help correct an asymmetrical jawline.

Other Medical Uses

This injection is far from a one-trick pony. When people think of a neuromodulator injection, they generally don’t think of it being used for anything but the face. However, just as it has multiple cosmetic uses, this injection can also be used to help in the management of multiple medical conditions.

Sweaty Hands, Armpits, or Feet

Sweating is the body’s response to exercise and sometimes nervousness. While it’s true that everyone sweats and it’s nothing to be ashamed of, the embarrassment that comes along with excessive sweat can sometimes be debilitating in social situations. Trying to hide sweat may come in the form of wiping your hands on your pants before that important handshake, or keeping your arms pinned to your side to hide sweat stains.

Rather than constantly relying on antiperspirants, or dabbing yourself off in the bathroom, some people have found relief from their sweat by receiving neuromodulator injections. When precisely injected into the problem areas, it can block the communication between your nerves and your sweat glands.

Cervical Dystonia in Adults

Cervical dystonia affects the muscles of your neck. It can cause these neck muscles to unpredictably and involuntarily contract, which may tilt and turn your head back and frontwards, or side to side. Neuromodulator injections can have their ability to relax these muscles put to good use, by calming the muscles that are acting up and causing pain.

Spasticity in Adults and Children Who Are at Least Two Years Old

Spasticity is similar to cervical dystonia in that it tightens and contracts muscles in an involuntary and often painful manner. Spasticity can affect other areas of the body, such as the arms and legs. A spasm can last anywhere from a couple of seconds to 15 minutes or more. When the muscles are contracted, it can be difficult or impossible to try to stretch them out from their retracted position.

As with cervical dystonia, a neuromodulator injection may relieve some symptoms of spasticity, allowing the treated individual more freedom of movement and comfort. For spasticity, a reduction of symptoms is usually noticeable after about two weeks. This treatment has the potential to help a patient feel better for several months.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What Exactly Is It Made Of?

Like Botox, this is a neuromodulator injection. Both of these injections contain the botulinum toxin, but they do differ slightly from one another. When compared to each other, Botox tends to be slightly more expensive and less diluted.

There are also slight differences in the ingredients, with Dysport containing abobotulinumtoxinA and Botox containing onabotulinumtoxinA. Both can be effective treatment options. In fact, they are sometimes used on the same patient for different areas of the face. The right doctor will be able to help determine which treatment will work best for the areas you would like addressed.

2. How Does It Work?

Neuromodulators work by interrupting nerve signals before they reach the muscle. This interruption stops the muscle from reacting to nerve transmissions, which allows the treated muscles to relax. This relaxation effect reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles, and also can help to prevent those same lines and wrinkles from deepening.

In the case of treating excessive sweat, it works by paralyzing the sweat glands. The injected area will not be able to produce as much sweat or odor as a result of this paralysis. Since the injection only affects the treated area, other areas of your body will be able to continue doing their job and produce sweat to help you regulate your temperature.

3. What Is the Difference Between Neuromodulator Injections and Dermal Fillers?

Neuromodulator injections work by relaxing and smoothing over the muscles of the face. They are especially effective for the lines and wrinkles of the upper face. While neuromodulator injections can also be helpful for the lower face, there are some signs of aging in the lower face that can be better addressed by dermal fillers.

The face loses its “fullness” over time. As the fat along your face starts to dissolve, your cheeks may start to sink in. This can cause the skin of your face to droop. Combined with the loss of skin elasticity, this loss of fat can further exaggerate lines and wrinkles along the lower face. Fillers help to restore some of the lost fullness. Fillers and neuromodulators can be used together to help achieve ideal results.

4. When Will I See Results, and How Long Will They Last?

You should be able to see and enjoy some of the effects of your injections in about two to three days. As it continues to settle and get to work, the appearance of your lines and wrinkles will gradually decrease until you hit two or three weeks, which is when your results will be at their full effect. For that reason, we recommend scheduling your injections two or three weeks before any special events you have planned.

After treatment reaches its full effect, you can expect your results to maintain themselves for about three to four months. Each case can vary slightly, with some people able to go longer between treatments. Once you decide on the best routine to maintain your results, we’ll be able to set your appointment frequency together accordingly.

5. How Long Does the Treatment Take, and Will I Have to Rest Afterwards?

Depending on what area you would like treated, you can expect treatment to take anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes. Many patients have even snuck it in during their lunch break! One of the best benefits of this injection is there is no downtime associated with it, so it has a minimal impact on your busy schedule.

Treatment is meant to be discreet, and the onset of results are gradual. You can slip in for an appointment and slip right back out, and no one should be able to guess where you’ve been. As results set in over the next couple of days, the injection will work with your natural beauty, restoring a youthful appearance instead of trying to reinvent your face.
