Stem Cell-Based Therapies

Treatment with stem cells has developed significantly over the past 20 years. Initially, the stem cells used for regenerative treatments were cells harvested from your own bone marrow or fat tissue. While this process is still being used — with positive results — more advanced variations have been developed and adopted.

Dr. Crose and his team at Capitis Medical and Aesthetics use stem cell extracellular vesicles (exosomes). These stem cells come from donor umbilical cord tissue, placenta tissue, bone marrow, or fat; however, since they are mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) — cells that are so early in development that they do not have markers that cause allergic reactions or rejection — they are entirely safe. Once these stem cells are harvested, they are grown in culture and then activated under stressful conditions. This action causes the stem cells to release communications signals that will allow for repair when introduced to the patient. These exosomes are then collected, purified, concentrated, and flash-frozen.

As potent messenger cells, exosomes harness powerful regenerative and healing properties. They provide anti-inflammatory and pro-healing cytokines, parakines, hormones, and microRNA (cell communicators) to help jump-start the immune system and allow your body to heal itself

What Are the Benefits of Stem Cell-Based Therapies?

Research and clinical trials are consistently underway to understand the full extent of the benefits offered by stem cell and exosome therapies. The possibilities are truly endless, which is what makes this type of regenerative medicine so exciting.

At Capitis Medical and Aesthetics, we incorporate stem cell exosomes into many of our treatment protocols, either as the primary therapy or for added benefits because the benefits are so vast and the risks so low.

While not a complete list, exosome therapies have been used to reduce or treat the following:

  • Pain/chronic pain, including joint pain, arthritis, and more
  • Nerve disorders
  • Thinning hair/hair loss
  • Aging/damaged skin

In some instances, stem cell therapy has even been used as an effective alternative to invasive surgery for pain.

Stem cell-based therapies provide these key therapeutic effects:

  • They influence cell growth and movement
  • They promote nerve regeneration
  • They are anti-fibrotic
  • They are anti-inflammatory
  • They promote immunomodulation
  • They promote tissue regeneration
  • They influence gene and protein expression
  • They contribute to cell fate decision (apoptosis)

In addition to their regenerative benefits, one of the best aspects of stem cell-based therapies is their safety. There are currently over 20 clinical trials in the U.S. studying stem cells and the safety of stem cells, and in those trials, there have been zero adverse reactions or serious side effects. These cells cannot transdifferentiate into malignant cells (like tumors) and are not linked to autoimmune concerns.

As a research institute, Capitis Medical and Aesthetics has access to the highest quality stem cell exosomes, and safety is paramount.

One of the most appealing aspects of exosome therapy is there is virtually no downtime. Most patients are able to return to daily activities immediately following treatment.

How Much Do Stem Cell-Based Therapies Cost?

The cost of stem cell therapies will vary from patient to patient, as this treatment is highly specialized based on the area of treatment, the severity of the condition, and the number of treatments required.

Dr. Crose will provide patients with a comprehensive consultation to determine the treatment route and can provide a personalized cost estimate at that time.

When Will I See the Results of Stem Cell-Based Therapies?

As exosome stem cell-based therapies work to encourage the natural healing and regenerative properties of the body, results can take some time to become apparent or visible. This time frame will vary with patients, but you can expect to see the effects of stem cell-based therapy anywhere from two to 12 weeks after treatment.

Some conditions gradually improve over the following months, so do not be disheartened if your treatment takes longer.

Am I a Candidate for Stem Cell-Based Therapies?

Anyone dealing with acute or chronic pain that has not been successfully managed with more traditional treatments should consider stem cell therapies as a potential treatment option. Stem cell injections have provided our patients with numerous benefits, including a significant reduction in pain and gain in function.

If you suffer from hair loss, hair thinning, or other concerns, such as alopecia and male or female pattern baldness, stem cell-based therapies may be for you. MSC exosomes promote existing hair to grow back fuller and thicker. Candidates must have at least miniaturized or vellus hair (“peach fuzz”) that can be stimulated to grow into terminal hair.

How Are Stem Cell-Based Therapies Performed?

For his patients, Dr. Crose uses stem cell-derived exosomes. Like all cells in the body, MSCs release signals to the surrounding cells that allow them to communicate with each other. These exosomes replicate the therapeutic effects of their donor cells with little risk of the side effects associated with more traditional medical drugs and treatments.

Because we rely on stem cell exosomes that have been prepared and sent to us directly from the lab, there is no preparation before your treatment, as stem cells do not need to be harvested from your bone marrow or fat. Instead, high-quality exosomes are injected directly into the treatment area, delivered through IV infusion, or incorporated into the therapy or cosmetic treatment being performed.

Lidocaine can be used to numb the area and increase comfort.
